
Imagine a world where Italy doesn’t have tomatoes, Russia couldn’t make their Vodka from potatoes, you didn’t see kilometres of corn or maiz whilst driving through Europe, or Satay sauce didn’t exist.
The reality is that before colonialism or especially the discovery of the Americas this was the reality of the people who lived in these cultures. The other thought is what were these people eating if it forms a staple food of their culture?
There are many stories throughout European history of trade with the Middle East to obtain spices. Marco Polo on his journey to China brought back to Italy the idea of the noodle. And the discovery of the Americas brought back to Europe an unimaginable source of food wealth that one would be surprised to think that all these food sources came from one continent.
