Australians have a habit of shortening people’s names or the name of the city or town the live in. As a new person to an area it is always cool to know what the locals call their town. Names are usally shortened to the first syllable and then add a “y” or “o” to the end of the word. So Coolangatta becomes “Cooly”, the surname Ford becomes Fordy or a foreign name like Miloslav becomes “Millo”
These are nicknames for certain places. They are not as pejorative as the ones excluded, so they can be used without fear of reprisals.
