Ever since I first started listening to Brazilian music and heard Sergio Mendes’ song Magalenha and then Os Mutantes-Minha Menina, I started to notice some good music to put to a party tape or CD. I put Minha Menina in a 60’s party CD, and it got every dancing, all my friends were asking me about the song. Then a friend introduced me to DJ Patife and there was another big list of great songs.

This awesome song from “the Mutants” really has a great sound, from the Tropicalia movement, which has a psychedelic rock sound is a good song to party to and also good for 60’s mixed tapes

DJ Patife really has a great sound, in this song fusing traditional samba with modern drum’n’bass
15 Sou Faraó– Timbalada
The musical genius that is called Carlinhos Brown, lends his percussions and voice to this great song. You might often hear it played at Carnaval
14 De Costas Para o Mundo– DJ Patife & Fernanda Porto
Another great fastbeat song from Dj Patife
13 Me Namora– Edu Ribeiro
As reggae is also popular in Brazil this cool popular reggae beat is worth the listen and to sway to

“I know how to love” is a good groovy song to slow things down a bit

This is an amazing song possibly from traditional music, based around a large group of percussionists, many bongos and mobile drummers, which you might here at Carnaval. If you are visiting Salvador during Carnaval you might even see Carlinhos himself leading the group

Fernanda collaborated with Carlinhos Brown for the song Sambassim, she bring her singing and acoustic guitar to this groovy sounding song

A Brazilian classic about the beat up old car called the Calhambeque
5 Garota de Ipanema– Antônio Carlos Jobim
Another Brazilian classic ” the girl from Ipanema” with it’s smooth beat, from the jaz style bossa nova, there are many English versions, for example the one by Frank Sinatra

Recently made popular with Black Eyed Peas and the move Rio, Sergio Mendes brings out another great song to dance to

A bit of smooth hip hop from Zé
