If you are looking for nature and wilderness in Germany than the most beautiful part of the country to do this is Lake Constance or as it is known in German Bodensee (lower lake). Lake Constance is situated in the corner of the famed and much visited Black Forest (Schwarzwald), but unlike any other part of Germany this forest comes with the countries largest lake, with many beautiful, walks, bicycle lanes, leisure activities and tourist activities.
Sitting at the bottom of Germany is this beautiful peace of nature. Actually part of the River Rhine as it makes it’s way to Holland, Lake Constance known as Bodensee or Lower lake, lies mostly within Germany. Domestically, Lake Constance is one of Germany’s biggest holiday destinations, a place where you can go and relax in the warmer months, because there is so much do and explore there when relaxing by the beach becomes a little boring. The views on the lake are beautiful and the surrounding countryside is very quiet and relaxing. Even some of the main tourist towns of Überlingen and meersburg have quite a relaxed feel to them.
While it is possible to see some of the towns from the lake shore one of the best ways to visit the lake is by taking a boat. From towns like Lindau, Konstanz, Meersburg and Überlingen, you can visit lake side towns of Bregenz in Austria, and St. Gallen in Switzerland by boat and take it the views of the lake at the same time.
Meersburg in Germany is a quaint little town with historic village walkways and adorned with flowers in the summer, while Konstanz the main city on the lake, also has many older buildings and a visit to the local museum is a must as the city was the home of the Hindenburg airships.
One of the best ways to see the lake and it’s surrounding countryside is to take a bike tour. From the northern shore you can take your bike on the boat to Knostanz and from there take the bicycle lanes to visit popular tourist attractions like the Island of Mainau.
Mainau island is one of the largest tourist attractions in southern Germany. The park contains a palace and manicured gardens, like the Italian rose garden that are very popular with the tourists. These is also a glass arbortum which has a tropical garden display within the park.
While you are taking a boat trip across the lake you will mostly see forests, as the famed Black Forest ends here at the southern limit of Germany. It is one of the few true wilderness areas you will come across in Germany, which is a modern industrialised and ordered country.
Other great tourist attractions around the Lake area are Rhine falls near Schaffhausen in Switzerland, the Black Forest, and the nearby Bavarian Alps
