For many years Triple J an Australia wide radio station funded by the government, has been keeping many of it’s listening audience happy with alternative non-commercial tunes. It plays solely alternative music and will only play on high rotation songs from the current 4 month period. It is popular with the younger generation and has many features that are not often used on commercial radio station, which keeps the listeners interactive constantly, and follow the goings on on the station with a lot of intent.
Recently in 2011, a vote was put for the best 100 Australian albums of all time. It must be stated that they are the best 100 albums according to the listeners of that station. Had the vote been given to a different audience the album choices would have been quite different.
The winner was a well deserved Powderfinger Odyssey no.5.
Things to note is that AC/DC included in the count were formed in Australia by a group of immigrants, a few of which still think of Australia as home.
On the page showing the 100 albums in full, it was interesting to note some of the choices of best albums of musical peers within Australia. A few particular notables there were Easybeats album Easy which was a great album written by AC/DC Young brothers older brother George Young and friend Harry Vanda, who were standouts in Australian music in the late 60’s.

These choices were based on still being able pick up the album after however many years old they are, and listen to them end to end. They are my favourites but it also worthy to note other albums that were groundbreaking at the time and I have to salute the band for their creativity. These albums are Easy-Easybeats, Kick- Inxs, Get Born- Jet, Wolfmother-Wolfmother, Crowded house-Crowded House, Highly Evolved- The Vines, Business As Usual- Men At Work, Gangajang- Gangajang, Frogstomp– Silverchair, Great Southern Land- Icehouse, Daddy Cool- Daddy Cool. Most albums from Midnight Oil, Crowded House, AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, Spiderbait, Hoodoo Gurus, and Australian Crawl, are also worth a listen.
Recognition of recent great albums have come to 2 great Perth bands, Tame Impala for their album Innerspeak, and Empire of the Sun-Walking on A Dream which is internationally successful.
And others worth mentioning for sentimental because I like their music also are Tumbleweed, The Angels, Divinyls, Radio Birdman, Rose Tattoo, The Saints, The Go Betweens, who have put in their time and contributions to Australian music and have a long list of hits
