It might be the most isolated city in the world, but it connects a lot with the rest of the world when it comes to music. Great sounds have come out of Perth in the past, but if you look at the current line-up of successful music acts that have come from Perth you’d be amazed. Also when you compare it with other Australian cities it is producing more than it’s fair share of great music. So good is the music scene in Western Australia, that it is the only state in Australia, with their own yearly music awards the WAMI’s.
To give you an idea of the talent, the first lead singer of AC/DC, Bon Scott was from Perth, and the band the Triffids with their great songs “Wide Open Road” and“Bury Me Deep in Love”.
Last year was also a great year with Empire of the Sun, San Cisco, and Birds of Tokyo all making great success, both nationally and internationally. I was surprised to hear Empire of the Sun on rotation on Colombian rock radio stations.
In the 90’s the Perth music scene was headed by such bands as Eskimo Joe, Jebediah and Ammonia. Eskimo Joe were one of the biggest Australian bands of the era with hit’s like every song from the album Girl and other’s like Sweater, From the Sea and the song that got them commercial radio success Black Fingernails-Red Wine.
One noteable band at the moment is indie-band Tame Impala who sound like Deep Purple, and have some great songs like Lucidity and Solitude Is Bliss.
Other great bands are the Sleepy Jackson, Gyroscope, The Panics, Snowman, Institut Polaire, Little Birdy, End of Fashion,Bob Evans and Sugar Army.
