
Today we celebrate Canadian music present and past. The heyday’s of the Canadian rock industry were the early 70’s and currently the new indie wave have brought some good music back into the bars and venues of Canada. So here’s the Best of Canuck Rock that we discovered:
The Old Stuff
Neil Young– This guy is a legend and one of the biggest names ever in the rock’n’roll industry, and the biggest name to come from Canada. Even to this day his 1972 album Harvest and many others are still worth a listen from end to end. He has had a few incarnations as a rock’n’roll act most notably his solo career, a member of Buffalo Springfield and shortly with Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young). Some of his best songs are Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Rockin in a Free World
The Guess Who– mostly famous for their song American Woman
Bachmann Turner Overdrive– a band from the early 70’s famous for their brand of highway cruising music had hits like Born To Be Wild, Taking Care Of Business
Joni Mitchell– Big Yellow Taxi
Steppenwolf– a huge Canadian/American band from the late 60’s mid 70’s. Famous for their songs Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride
Anne Murray– a Canadian country singer her most popular song is You Needed Me
The Band– Inspired by blues this popular song The Weight was one of their best
The 80’s
Bryan Adams– a popular international success, with many hits Bryan Adams greatest hits would be full from end to end with many well known sing a long songs
Summer of 69, Heaven and Run To You are 3 popular songs
Loverboy– 80’s glam pop band Loverboy had a big hit with their 1981 album Get Lucky. From there we have their greatest hits- Turn Me Loose, Working For The Weekend
Jeff Healey Band– a blind gifted blues guitarist, Jeff was probably the first to play his guitar flat
Men Without Hats– the one hit wonders famous for their hit Safety Dance
Martha and the Muffins– pretty much another one hit wonder their popular song was Echo Beach
The 90’s
The Tea Party– a popular indie act from the 90’s with is a style like a Deep Purple rock ballad, these guys are seriously worth a listen. Good songs are The Bazaar, Sister Awake, Temptation, Heaving Coming Down
Crash Test Dummies– famous for their Mmm Mmm and also their name
KD Lang– Constantly Craving
Avril Lavigne– chick rocker Avril has had hits with Sk8er Boi, and Complicated
Cowboy Junkies– these guys are most famous for their modern cover of the Lou Reed hit- Sweet Jane
Nickelback– These guys are internationally famous, but not everyone’s style of good music. Some people love their music others change the radio station.
Shania Twain– a country music star Man! I Feel Like A Woman
Alanis Morrisette– a child music talent Alanis hit the international limelight in 1995 when her album Jagged Little Pill was one of the most played of that year
The Tragically Hip– These guys are the Canadian band for the Canadians. Although they have had international attention, they are probably the biggest Canadian act not to make it huge outside of the country- Courage, New Orleans Is Sinking, Ahead By A Century
The Noughties
Michael Bublé– the great Canadian crooner. Though his style is more Frank Sinatra and of days gone by, his music still is catchy and worth a listen.
Justin Bieber– love him or not Justin is talented musician and Canadian, and has sold a lot of records
Nelly Furtado– Pop sing Nelly has been one of Canada’s biggest acts lately with her pop style music I’m Like A bird, Turn Off The Light
The New Stuff
Hot Hot Heat– one of the current bands flying the flag indie rockers Hot Hot Heat have had good success with Middle Of Nowhere and Goodnight Goodnight
Tegan and Sarah– Back In Your Head
Alexisonfire– This Could Be Anywhere In The World
Arcade Fire– another good current indie band. Popular song: Rebellion, Wake Up
The New Pornographers- Moves
Broken Social Scene– Almost Crimes
Stars- another popular indie rock band Your Ex Lover Is Dead
